Grapefruit Honey Mint Tea

What a weekend. Although we celebrated Thanksgiving early here in Canada, this weekend was still filled with long cooking sessions, meals with friends and family, and lots of eating. I'm stuffed.

On days like these a nice long walk is usually in the cards. It's a good way to try and balance out all the exercise my mouth / stomach did on the weekend. But, after one step outside without my coat – I can tell you, it's definitely nippy out. So now I'm currently sitting on the couch wrapped up in a blanket – working up the courage to brave this unusually cold Vancouver weather. And yes, at 2°C / 36°F, I realize I'm being a bit of a baby.

Tea – it’s the one thing you absolutely need in weather like this. When you drink as much tea as we do, it's definitely easy to get bored of your usual blends. When we're feeling a bit ho-hum about the next pot, or if just feeling a bit more creative, our go to scratch drink is this Grapefruit Honey Mint tea. It's perfect if you're starting to feel a bit under the weather, or just want a darn tasty hot bevy. And, especially great at night time when you want to skip the caffeine.

 I first tried this tea at a Toronto café that was dangerously close to my work building. It's not technically tea, because there's no actual tea leaves in it, but when it tastes this good, who cares what you call it. The blend of mint, fresh grapefruit juice and honey is a refreshing and heart-warming combo. When I first tried it, I had one of those [smack forehead] "Why didn't I think of this?!" moments. I don't know why it took me so long to it at home. Because, spoiler alert: the ingredients are exactly what you'd expect. Grapefruit. Honey. Mint. And now that I've got the ratios down pat, I feel a bit of regret thinking about how much money I've shelled out for it in the past!

Chances are you already knew grapefruit was healthy. It's packed with vitamin C – in fact, a single grapefruit more than covers your vitamin C needs for the day! With flu season upon us, vitamin C can help with the prevention of colds (source). A lesser known fact about grapefruit is that it contains lycopene, a carotenoid found in red fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes. Lycopene is considered to be a powerful antioxidant – and can play a role in "reduc[ing] inflammation and cholesterol, improving immune function, and prevent blood from clotting" (source). Researchers are also investigating lycopene benefits when it comes to cancer and stroke prevention.

Basically, this is one tea you can feel great about. And, since peak season for grapefruit tends to fall in November through March, now is the perfect time. Drink up!

Grapefruit Honey Mint Tea // Natural Girl Modern World // Gluten Free




  • 2 sprigs of mint (extra for garnish, if desired)*

  • 3/4 cup water

  • 3/4 cup fresh grapefruit juice (~1 whole grapefruit)**

  • Honey, to taste (~1 1/2 teaspoons)


  1. Put water and mint sprigs into a small pot. Heat over medium heat and bring to a boil.

  2. While the water is boiling, cut the grapefruit in half and squeeze to juice.

  3. Once the water is boiling, reduce to a simmer. Simmer for ~2-3 minutes, then remove sprigs of mint. Add grapefruit juice and honey. Adjust honey based on desired sweetness. Pour into a mug and garnish with extra mint, if desired. Enjoy warm.

-This recipe can be easily scaled up. Just use a 1:1 ratio for grapefruit juice and water; and adjust the rest accordingly.
-*Each sprig should have ~15 mint leaves (~30 leaves total). If you have smaller sprigs, just add an extra one to the pot. They don't steep for long, so there needs to be enough mint to extract flavor.
-**The juice yield can differ by fruit. Best to have an extra grapefruit on hand in case you run a bit short. And, that way you can make extra! If you want to remove all traces of pulp, strain juice before adding to hot water.
