These vegan air fried avocado fries are crispy, creamy, and just begging to be dipped in chipotle mayo. The air fryer makes delicious, craveable food—like Crispy Breaded Tofu, Broccoli Fries, Crispy Tofu Sticks with Honey Mustard, and Broccoli Tater Tots. And obviously, avocados are no exception. This recipe takes avocados, adds a crispy coating, and air fries (or bakes) them until golden brown. They make an addictive snack, side, or component for a main dish!
A single batch is good for 2 to 3 people, which is perfect since avocado fries are best fresh. When we're having friends over, a double batch is necessary—because once everyone tries one, they'll have a hard time stopping until they're all gone!

Why you'll love this recipe
- Fast: This recipe takes less than 10 minutes of active time. And then, the air fryer makes quick work of crisping up the avocado!
- Vegan / Egg-Free: Most breaded avocado recipes use eggs for the "wet" coating. Instead, this recipe uses non-dairy milk to get the panko breadcrumbs to stick.
- Very little oil: Oil spray makes it easy to get a golden brown, flavorful coating (especially in the air fryer!). This method uses a lot less oil than drizzling it with a spoon or the bottle.
- Kid (and adult) friendly: Avocado has a mild taste and creamy texture, so it's usually a crowd pleaser. Especially when it's coated with crispy panko breadcrumbs and served with sauce for dipping.
- Versatile: You don't just need to eat these like fries! These crispy vegan avocado slices can be used in a variety of different mains and snacks (see the ideas below).
Ingredients (and substitutes)
These vegan avocado fries don't require a lot of ingredients. Here's what you'll need:
- Avocado: Choose ripe avocados that are on the firmer side. This will make the slices easier to cut and handle.
- Dairy-free milk: You want to use a plain, unsweetened dairy-free milk. We love to use a barista-style oat milk for this, because of its neutral flavor. But, we've also tested this recipe with cashew and almond milk—and they work too! If you're not vegan, you could use regular milk.
- Panko breadcrumbs: This is what gives the avocados a crispy exterior. You could use whole grain panko breadcrumbs, but don't substitute with regular breadcrumbs.
- Chipotle Mayo: This two ingredient dip takes only minutes to make really—and it really takes these avocado fries over the top! It's smoky, creamy, and perfect for dipping crisp fries into.
- Oil spray: A light spray of oil helps to evenly coat the panko so it turns golden brown. If you don't have a bottle of oil spray, do your best to drizzle oil over the fries as evenly as possible before baking.

How to make (step-by-step photos)
Here's how to make these crispy vegan avocado fries in the air fryer. (For instructions on how to bake these avocado fries in the oven, refer to the notes at the bottom of the recipe).

Cooking tip: If you're making a double batch, you'll likely need bake them separately in the air fryer so the fries don't overlap. Finish coating half of the avocado fries (1st batch), then put them in the air fryer basket and bake. You can continue coating the rest (2nd batch) while the first batch bakes.
Serving suggestions
These crispy avocado slices are extremely versatile! Here's how to serve them:
- Fries and dip: Serve these hot from the oven with either Chipotle Mayo or Dijon Aioli.
- Add them to bowls: Add this crispy air fried avocado to grain or rice bowls topped with colorful veggies, then drizzle with sauce.
- Use them in tacos: Everyone loves avocado in their tacos! These make for a creamy and crispy plant-based taco filling.
- Tuck them into sandwiches: Use the air fried avocado slices as a hearty meatless sandwich filling, with warm toasted bread.
- Add them to salads: While the vegan avocado fries are in the air fryer, you have time to wash some greens and chop up some fresh veggies. Fries and salad is the best of both worlds! The crispy avocado would pair well with this Curry Apple Salad and this Vegan Caesar Salad.
📖 Recipe
Vegan Avocado Fries (Air Fryer)
Ingredients
- 1 large avocado (ripe but slightly firm)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (more as needed)
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 3 tablespoons non-dairy milk (plain, unsweetened)
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
- Oil spray
- Chipotle Mayo (for serving)
Instructions
- Cut avocado: Cut the avocado in half, remove the peel and pit, then cut into ¼-inch (0.5 cm) thick slices.
- Prep coatings: In a small shallow bowl, mix together flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Add milk to a second small bowl. Add panko to a third small bowl.
- Coat avocado (see note 1): Working with one slice at a time, cover the avocado in the flour, then dip it in milk. Transfer the avocado to the panko and coat both sides. Arrange the coated avocado in an air fryer basket (see note 2 for oven method).
- Spray and bake: Spray slices with oil. Bake in an air fryer (no need to preheat) at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown. While hot, season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve with chipotle mayo for dipping.
Notes
- Tip for coating: When coating/dredging, it is usually helpful to keep one hand "dry" and the other hand "wet". For example, pick up the avocado slice with your right ("wet") hand and add it to the flour. Then, use your left ("dry") hand to scatter the flour over the avocado. Pick up the floured avocado with your right hand and dip it into the milk and transfer it to the dish of panko. Then use your left hand to sprinkle the panko over the avocado. (This sounds more complicated than it is, but it's worth trying!)
- Oven method: To bake these avocado fries, preheat an oven to 425°F (220°C). Arrange the avocado fries on a parchment lined baking sheet, spray the tops with oil and bake for 10 minutes. Then, flip the avocado fries, spray again with oil, and bake until golden brown and crispy, about 10 more minutes.
- Serving suggestions: As fries, these are best served with chipotle mayo—but this Vegan Dijon Aioli is delicious too. You can also serve these crispy slices of avocados in bowls, tacos, or wraps. Best served fresh.
