This Greek Yogurt Buffalo Sauce makes a delicious and healthy dip. Most creamy dips call for sour cream or cream cheese (or both!). But, this recipe uses thick Greek yogurt as a lighter alternative. The contrast of creamy yogurt and zesty hot sauce is a match made in heaven. The result is a crowd-pleasing sauce that can be served with pretty much anything you'd like!
We've shared other savory Greek yogurt dips on the blog, including Jalapeno Ranch Dip and Yogurt Onion Dip with Crispy Shallots. But, for even more ideas on how to use yogurt as a healthier substitute, check out our vegetarian cookbook!

Ingredients (and substitutes)
You only need 6 ingredients to make this creamy Greek Yogurt Buffalo Sauce:
- Greek Yogurt: Usually, creamy buffalo sauces use sour cream or cream cheese. But, this recipe uses thick Greek yogurt instead. It's delicious, creamy, and a healthier alternative. Make sure you use plain (unsweetened) Greek yogurt.
- Hot Sauce: Frank's Red Hot is the best hot sauce for buffalo sauce. In a pinch, you could swap a Mexican-style hot sauce, Sriracha or a substitute. But, substitutes will make it taste less like a traditional buffalo-style sauce.
- Chives: Chives add a mild onion-y flavor. You could substitute with minced green onion (scallions) instead.
- Lemon Zest: Lemon helps brighten up this tangy dip. While we do love the hint of flavor it adds, you could skip it if you're out of fresh lemon.

Tips
- Full-fat Greek yogurt: Use full-fat Greek yogurt for the best taste and texture. Remember that yogurt is already a healthier swap compared to sour cream! But, if you really wanted, you could use a low-fat Greek yogurt instead.
- Hot sauce substitute: Buffalo sauce traditionally uses Frank's Red Hot. So, that's what we recommend in this recipe. You can substitute a different hot sauce if you need to...but it does take away from the buffalo-style flavor. Refer to Best Sriracha Substitutes for hot sauce substitute ideas.
- Serve chilled: This dip is most refreshing when served cold. If you don't plan to serve it right away, cover and refrigerate it.
- Thin to make it a dressing: You could thin this sauce with lemon juice or buttermilk to make a zesty salad dressing! Drizzle over a crisp iceberg lettuce salad or a colorful grain bowl.

Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can substitute the chives with minced green onions (scallions) instead.
We tested both ways and preferred garlic powder because it's milder. But, if you'd like to use fresh garlic instead, you definitely can! In that case, grate the garlic using a microplane or finely mince it. Add to taste.
This sauce is delicious served with fresh veggies, like celery sticks. But, it's also great as a dip—paired with Broccoli Tater Tots, Avocado Fries, Crispy Tofu Sticks, Broccoli Fries, or Pita Chips. 📖 Recipe
Greek Yogurt Buffalo Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 cup Greek yogurt (full-fat recommended)
- 2 tablespoons minced chives (see note 1)
- 3 to 4 teaspoons Frank's Red Hot sauce (see note 2)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon lemon zest
- Salt (to taste)
Instructions
- Mix: Add Greek yogurt, chives, Frank's Red Hot, garlic powder, and lemon zest to a bowl. Whisk until smooth. Add salt to taste (and more Frank's if desired).
Notes
- Chives: You can use green onions (scallions) instead of fresh chives. If substituting green onions, make sure to finely mince them since chives are much smaller.
- Hot Sauce: We recommend Frank's Red Hot because it provides a traditional buffalo sauce flavor. But, you could use another similar hot sauce substitute instead.
- Serving Suggestions: This versatile sauce can be served with fresh veggies, nuggets, potato chips, tots, fries, pizza, salads, and so much more! To use this sauce as a salad dressing, you may wish to thin it with lemon juice or buttermilk.
- Storage Tips: Cover and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days.
