- Kid friendly: This refreshing fruit smoothie tastes great to both kids and adults. Make a batch for the whole family!
Ingredients (and substitutes)
You only need 4 ingredients to make this easy fruit smoothie:
- Frozen Pineapple: Frozen pineapple chunks are a convenient way to enjoy tropical fruit. Frozen fruit is picked at peak freshness, so they're usually perfectly ripe and sweet. And, because it's frozen you don't need ice. You can substitute fresh pineapple and ice instead.
- Frozen Blueberries: Blueberries are both delicious and nutritious. Frozen blueberries are typically less expensive than fresh ones. And, they also make your smoothie cold. Use frozen berries if you can, otherwise substitute with fresh blueberries and ice.
- Orange Juice: Orange really complements pineapple and blueberry! Use a high-quality orange juice you love. Freshly squeezed orange juice will have the best flavor, but that's often not practical. Store-bought is totally fine—but if you can, buy one that's fresh and not from concentrate. If you have extra orange juice, make these Frozen Mango Margaritas (Mangoritas) for the adults!
- Banana: Thickens the smoothie and provides a hint of sweetness. This recipe calls for a room-temperature banana, since it's more convenient than frozen banana.

Tips
- Frozen fruit is often superior for smoothies: Frozen fruit is picked at peak freshness, then immediately frozen. So, you can count on them being delicious—even if they're not in season. And, it tends to be cheaper than fresh fruit.
- Buy frozen fruit in bulk: We like to buy frozen fruit from Costco. Their bulk size is more economical than grocery stores. Another budget-friendly hack is to look for brands that sell frozen "imperfect" fruit. They're cheaper and it's great for smoothies since it gets blended up anyways.
- Skip the ice for more concentrated flavor: Ice is great for making smoothies cold, but it unfortunately dilutes the flavor. So, we prefer to use frozen fruit instead. When we tested this recipe, we made sure the volume of frozen fruit makes the smoothie cold without ice.
- Use a good quality orange juice: The brightness of the orange juice helps amplify the blueberry and pineapple flavors. To accomplish this, it's important to use an orange juice with good flavor. Avoid overly processed and from-concentrate juices which don't have as good flavor.
- Garnish ideas: You don't need to add garnishes. But if you wanted to, add a slice of pineapple to the glass or sprinkle some blueberries on top.

Pin Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks (see note 1)
- 1 cup frozen blueberries (see note 1)
- 1 banana (see note 2)
- 1 cup orange juice (more if needed, see note 3)
Instructions
- Blend: Add 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks, 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1 banana, and 1 cup orange juice to a blender. Blend until smooth. (If needed, you can thin with more juice). Pour into glasses and enjoy.
Notes
- Frozen Fruit: This recipe uses frozen pineapple and blueberries, so you don't need ice. You can substitute with fresh pineapple or blueberries if needed. But if using fresh fruit, you'll have to add ½ to 1 cup ice (otherwise your drink won't be cold). Ice dilutes the flavor of the drink, so you may want to use a bit more fresh fruit than the recipe calls for.
- Banana: We tested this recipe with room temperature banana. You could substitute frozen banana if you'd like. But it'll make the smoothie thicker, so use a high-speed blender and/or more orange juice to thin, if needed.
- Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice has the best flavor. Otherwise, use a high quality store-bought orange juice (ideally fresh, not from concentrate). Depending on your blender and desired consistency, you may wish to add an extra splash of orange juice to thin.
- Optional Garnish Ideas: It's not necessary to garnish this smoothie. But if you do, you could add a piece of fresh pineapple to the glass. Or sprinkle the top with blueberries (frozen or fresh).
