Recipe FAQs
A classic Moscow Mule is a cocktail made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.
There are many Moscow Mule variations, including those that use different alcohol (such as tequila, bourbon, gin, rum, or whiskey) or different flavorings (such as berries, apples, or other fruit).
Moscow Mules are traditionally served in copper mugs. There are many theories about the history of this tradition. However, copper does serve a functional purpose too.
Copper is an excellent thermal conductor, so it responds quickly to the temperature of what's inside it. When a copper mug is filled with a cold drink, it will quickly become frosty and cold on the outside. This makes the drink feel extra refreshing to sip on a hot day!
Worth noting, most new copper mugs these days are not actually made from pure copper. They are often made with another metal (such as stainless steel), and then plated with copper. The result is that the mugs are more durable and less at risk of copper leaching—but they are unfortunately not as effective thermal conductors.
Ginger beer is a very important ingredient in this cocktail. Fever-Tree makes our favorite ginger beer for Moscow Mules. It has a fresh and pronounced ginger flavor that compliments the cocktail well.
You can pre-mix the raspberries, sugar, lime juice, and vodka in advance and refrigerate. But, don't add the ice or ginger beer until just before serving.
