Ingredients (and substitutes)
You only need 3 or 4 ingredients to make this kiwi mango smoothie recipe.
- Frozen Mango: Frozen chunks of mango are a quick and easy way to add tropical flavor to this smoothie! It also means you don't need to use ice (which dilutes the flavor). But, if you needed to, you could substitute fresh mango and ice instead.
- Kiwi: This recipe doesn't call for freezing the kiwi first, because that adds too much time and effort! Instead, just peel the fresh kiwi and add it straight to the blender. We tested this recipe with green kiwi, but yellow kiwi should work too.
- Banana (optional): Banana thickens the smoothie and makes it slightly sweeter. But, some people don't like banana in smoothies, so you can leave it out if you prefer.
- Orange Juice: Citrus really makes the flavors sing! Use a high-quality orange juice not-from-concentrate (freshly squeezed or store-bought).

Recipe Testing Note: We tested this smoothie recipe with orange juice and with milk. The version with orange juice was the clear winner. The brightness from the citrus enhanced the tropical flavors from the kiwi and mango. The version with milk was still enjoyable—but it had more of a neutral impact on flavor.

Tips
- How to tell if a kiwi is ripe: At the store, both ripe and unripe kiwi have brown skin...so that's not too helpful! Instead, use touch and smell to tell if a kiwi is ripe. A ripe kiwi will have a bit of give when you gently press on it. But, it shouldn't be hard or super soft. And, it should smell like kiwi!
- How to ripen a kiwi faster: You should let your kiwi ripen at room temperature before using. To speed up the ripening process, place the kiwi in a sealed paper bag with a banana or apple. These fruits release ethylene gas which will help the kiwi ripen faster. This method works for other fruit, like avocado too.
- Save money with frozen fruit: Frozen fruit is usually cheaper than fresh. And, it's even more economical to buy it in bulk—like the large bags at Costco. Or look for brands that sell "imperfect" frozen fruit. Since it's getting blended anyways, you'll never know the difference!
- Use a high quality orange juice: Citrus loses some of its natural flavor as it sits. Freshly squeezed juice obviously has the best flavor. But, it isn't always practical. Usually we just use a refrigerated store-bought juice (not-from-concentrate).
- Garnish ideas: You definitely don't need to garnish this smoothie. But if you wanted to, try a slice of fresh kiwi on the rim of the glass! Or top the smoothie with some chopped fruit.
- Make ahead tip: While smoothies are best enjoyed fresh, we found that leftover smoothie could be refrigerated overnight (up to 24 hours). The acidity from the orange juice and kiwi kept the banana from going brown during this period.

📖 Recipe
Mango Kiwi Smoothie
Ingredients
- 2 peeled kiwis (see note 1)
- 1½ cups frozen mango chunks
- 1 cup orange juice (more if needed, see note 2)
- 1 banana (see note 3)
Instructions
- Blend: To a blender, add 2 peeled kiwis, 1½ cups frozen mango chunks, 1 cup orange juice, and 1 banana. Blend until smooth. (If needed, you can thin with more juice). Pour into glasses and enjoy.
Notes
- Kiwi: We tested this recipe with green kiwi, but yellow kiwi should work too. To peel kiwi, you can either: a) Cut kiwi in half crosswise and use the spoon to scoop out the flesh, or b) Keep kiwi whole and use a vegetable peeler to remove the skin.
- Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed juice tastes best. But, you can definitely use store-bought juice instead—try to use a high-quality fresh juice, not from concentrate. Depending on your blender and desired consistency, you may wish to add an extra splash of orange juice to thin.
- Banana: Banana makes this smoothie a bit sweeter and creamier. But, we tested the smoothie with and without banana...and both were great! If you skip the banana, then it'll make a smaller serving (e.g. 1 large smoothie or 2 slightly smaller). Nutritional estimates include banana.
- Optional Garnish Ideas: A slice of fresh kiwi on the rim of the glass, chopped kiwi or mango on top of the smoothie.
