Why you'll love this recipe
- Healthy and it tastes like dessert: When you're craving something sweet, this delicious smoothie hits the spot. It's packed with fruit and fiber. And, almond butter adds protein and healthy fats. Enjoy for breakfast, snack or dessert!
- No yogurt: This smoothie is made without yogurt so it's dairy-free and easily vegan.
- No ice: Ice waters down the flavor in drinks. And not everyone has a stockpile of ice in their freezer. This recipe uses the right amount of frozen fruit so there's ice needed.
- Make it vegan (or not): Choose your favorite plant-based milk to keep this smoothie vegan. Or, use regular milk if you'd prefer dairy.
- Kid approved: This smoothie is just sweet enough, so both kids and adults can enjoy!
Ingredients (and substitutes)
This delicious raspberry blueberry smoothie has 6 ingredients. Here's what you need:
- Frozen Blueberries and Raspberries: We prefer frozen berries in smoothies because they're more budget-friendly than fresh berries. And, they replace the need for ice (which dilutes the flavor). You could substitute fresh berries and ice.
- Milk: We recommend an unsweetened vanilla non-dairy milk. Vanilla pairs well with berries! You can use your favorite plant milk, such as oat, almond, cashew, or soy. Or substitute regular cow's milk. If using regular milk, add a splash of vanilla extract for better flavor. (See recipe card for more details).
- Almond Butter: A spoonful of almond butter really rounds out the flavors in this creamy smoothie! It also adds a boost of protein. You could use peanut butter instead. Or, leave it out if you have a nut allergy.
- Date: In our recipe tests, a Medjool date added just the right amount of natural sweetness. Remember to remove the pit from the date before adding it to the blender! If you don't have a date, you could use a bit of maple syrup or honey—or leave it out.

Tips
- Softer dates are easier to blend: If you have a powerful blender (like a Vitamix), this step may not be necessary. But, if your dates are hard, you can soften them by soaking in hot water for 5 minutes. Drain then use as directed.
- Remember to pit the date: Some dates are sold with pits, while others are already pitted. Make sure to remove the pit (and any fragments) from the date before adding it to your blender.
- Vanilla elevates berry smoothies: We taste-tested this recipe with and without vanilla. Both were delicious, but the vanilla flavored version was slightly better. You can use a vanilla-flavored plant milk. Or, add vanilla extract to regular milk.
- Skip the ice by using frozen fruit: Ice dilutes a smoothie, so we prefer to skip it. This recipe uses enough frozen fruit to make it cold without ice.
- Buy frozen berries in bulk: Larger bags of frozen berries are usually more economical, especially at Costco or other warehouse-style grocery stores.

📖 Recipe
Blueberry Raspberry Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen blueberries (see note 1)
- 1 cup frozen raspberries (see note 1)
- 1 banana
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla non-dairy milk (or 1 cup milk + ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, see note 2)
- 1 tablespoon almond butter (see note 3)
- 1 pitted Medjool date (see note 4)
Instructions
- Blend: To a blender, add 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1 cup frozen raspberries, 1 banana, 1 cup unsweetened vanilla non-dairy milk, 1 tablespoon almond butter, and 1 pitted Medjool date. Blend until smooth. (If needed, you can thin with more milk).
Notes
- Berries: Frozen raspberries and blueberries will make this drink cold, without adding ice. You could substitute other types of frozen berries. Or, swap with fresh berries and add enough ice to chill (about ½ to 1½ cups of ice).
- Milk: We recommend a vanilla-flavored unsweetened dairy-free milk (such as almond, oat, cashew, or soy). Unflavored milk works too. But, for the best flavor, add ½ teaspoon vanilla extract if using an unflavored milk.
- Almond Butter: Adds creaminess and a hint of flavor that really rounds out the flavors in this smoothie. You could swap it with cashew butter or peanut butter (but it'll have a slightly more obvious flavor). Or, feel free to leave it out.
- Date: We found that a Medjool date added just the perfect touch of sweetness to this smoothie. You can swap another type of date instead of Medjool. Make sure the date is pitted before adding it to the blender. If your date is hard, you can soften it right before using. Just soak in hot water for 5 minutes, then drain. (High-speed blenders like Vitamix usually have no problem with semi-firm dates, but you know your blender best!).
